U18s to win the league |

Congratulations to the youth
team for getting off the bottom of the table. The only way is up.
Keep working lads.

Finally the lads have won a
game in the league. Lets hope they can carry it on. They had a
good win on Wednesday night in that new youth cup. Maybe they can go
all the way. Some good goals by the new centre midfielder (Terry).
Maybe things are starting to change under new coach Taviner? All the
best for the rest of the season lads.

I think you need to look at
the players that were there on Thursday. The majority are players who
have been signed up from other clubs just for this tournament. No doubt the
Club will try and keep them for next season, but where's the attraction if
they are playing in Division Two of Hampshire and not in the top flight?

I think you are right Rank
Outsider. They need to try and stay in the top league for Borough's
reputation. Those new players that were brought in can't stay next
year as they are all to old (18/18+). there are a lot of youngsters in the
youth team. Maybe this is why they aren't doing so well? I
think the players they had last year have to play to help the team out or
not.

I was very pleased with
Thursday night's game for the youth team. Two players stood out
mostly. I think the big man Cal Laycock and the new centre mid Joe
Terry did very well and helped the youth team to a good win. Hopefully they
can carry on good form at Winchester away. Come on you Boro'.
Gav |

17/01 |
I think a few of you have
missed my point. The players you saw on Thursday have been signed up to
play in this one cup only. They will all be playing for their regular teams
for league matches. It goes to show you what local talent is being
missed out on at Boro' because the outsiders who run it aren't aware of
what's on the club's doorstep.
Rank Outsider |

Could Someone please tell me

No news on the rearrangement

Actually the team you saw
Thursday consisted of only two players who are not currently at the Club -
Joe Terry and centre forward Steven Cammack. Cal Laycock plays for the
reserves but has work commitments and the goalie Pete Braisier has now been
transferred from Moneyfields. Also Rank Outsider, there is local
talent on our door step but the late appointment of our youth team setup
meant most players had already gone elsewhere. Just wait and see who
turns up next year.
Inside knowledge |
|
19/01 |
Rank outsider - that is no way
to encourage what is honestly a bunch of kids out there trying to keep
Boro's reputation alive. Most of the kids are still only 15 turning 16
this year and for them to be playing against 18 year olds and putting in
this kind of effort cannot be justified with sarcastic remarks. I will
put my mortgage on those lads showing the passion and desire needed to stay
in the league. Up The Boro'.
Keep the faith |
|
22/01 |
Keep the Faith - I'm sure the
youngsters are doing their best and my comments weren't meant to be
sarcastic or a dig at them. But at the end of the day they are struggling
to stay in the top flight. So it's no good Inside Knowledge saying "just
wait to see who turns up next year". Can the Club really expect to
entice youngsters to a second Division club when other clubs such as VT,
Moneyfields and what looks like being Locks Heath and Winchester will be
playing in Division One?
Rank Outsider |
|
22/01 |
Rank Outsider I'm sure your
comments will inspire all the kids to come flocking to the Club, I'm
sure they will look at this and say what a good Club and the fans get right
behind you! I'm sure the people looking after the kids are already
making plans for the lads that stay and the new players they want and if
they do go down I'm sure they will bounce back better and stronger.
Just keep supporting them with more positive comments.

And Rank Outsider, can a club
really expect to entice new up and coming young players with such
disappointing comments from its so called fans? Every youngster has to
start somewhere and we all know you can't instantly magic up a football
team. Football is about encouraging players - not about putting
ridiculous comments on a website knocking what confidence they have managed
to build up.
Football genius |
|
22/01 |
Rank outsider, you mention
other clubs. I'm sure what with going on across the water a few
players would jump at the chance to play at Boro' instead of Moneyfields.
It's the status of the club not the league that entices players.
Winning is secondary to producing players for the first team.
Knowledge |
|
23/01 |
Knowledge - how can you talk
about Club status enticing players and winning coming second to producing
players for the first team when we have another thread on this site slating
the first team manager and the way the Club is run? Apart from Manna,
who also got disillusioned and moved on, how many youth team players have
ever gone on to play first team football?
Rank Outsider |
|
23/01 |
Off the top of my head - Josh
Guise, Rob Pittman and that's without really thinking. Going back
further people still speak with admiration of Nicky Goater who spend many
years at the Club after playing for the U18s.

secondary to producing players for the first team but winning breeds
confidence and confidence makes a better player better. Players want

The Shadow |

24/01 |
Site Manager. I think you'll
find that Josh Guise was a Fleetlands player who came to the Club for one
season as a youth player before going back to Fleetlands. He only came to
Boro' when he had a falling out with Fleetlands and now he's at Fareham. To
me that says that status means nothing if players aren't given a chance. I
also don't recall Pittman playing for any of the Youth teams either. He was
at Moneyfields up until this season.
Rank Outsider |
|
24/01 |
I'll stand corrected on Rob
Pittman if you are right. It was my understanding he was an U18s
player though. Josh has played for both clubs (Boro' and Fleetlands)
and I was at Gosport for more than a season having played for the U16s under
Dougie Leask when he first came to prominence with something like 300 goals
in six games! Whether you can claim Fleetlands were responsible for
his talent and we pinched him or not is another matter.

Lloyd Oneil played for Gosport
Borough in under 7, 8, 9 and 10's teams before Portsmouth School Of
Excellence signed him and he left the Boro to play for Pompey alone.
He stayed at Portsmouth until he was released at under 16's then joined
Cambridge United as a scholar. He returned home in time for this
season and joined Boro' and after some very impressive performances for the
reserves and under 18's he was promoted to the first team where he has had
to wait his turn but when given has had some good performances scoring three
goals. He has also made the England colleges team for this year.
This boy has tremendous talent and is one that started at Boro' and
hopefully will have a long and successful career with us.

Site Manager - This is Rob
Pittmans first season with the Club but he is playing for both the Youth and
Reserves. No matter where these young players come from, it goes back
to my original point which was misconstrued by some on this stream. These
local young players are what the Club wants and needs, but are not coming to
the Club, or if they do, they're not staying because they see their chances
are limited. For a player, status means nothing if you can see that
you won't get a chance to play first team football. As a result the
Youth team and for that matter, the reserves are not as strong as they could
be. Their league positions quite clearly show you that. Reserves now
seventh and Youth seventh of eight.
Rank Outsider |
|
24/01 |
I don't think you understand
my point. The only responsibility the youth team has is to produce
players for the first team. Players will always want to play for a
"bigger" club. Take Robbie Pittman. He was a player well thought
of at Moneyfields but chose to play for his home club even though he had
been successful at Moneyfields. Whether he becomes a player remains to
be seen, and I for one aren't convinced yet, but winning will never precede
producing players.

Over the years there have been
several Youth players that have progressed to the first team - Andy Smith,
Stuart Hensman, Nicky Goater, Ian Ford, Danny Thomson, Danny Jeffries, Ian

Aaron Wilson from the "new ones" and Joshy Guise was in the youth side for a

There have been several youth
players that have gone on to do well at Boro'. Some have left, but some
have also come back as better players. Boro' has always been seen as the
main Club in the area so why shouldn't they come and go when they feel ready
to challenge for a first team place? As long as they are getting the chance
when they do return. No matter what with Boro', when you have been a
part of it, you will always have an interest in it.

Some rather positive and
negative comments on this matter. The present U18s are a very young
group. To back up "In the know" you can add the Juryeff brother's Gary
and Ian, Steve Morris, Andy Lowman, Steve Ingman, Tony Stares, Steve Bury
and Andy Bye (though Andy mostly played at Fareham and Steve Bury/Ian
Juryeff forged professional career's) but they all played for the youth and
first team. A youth team is a vital part of the Club. Also at
this level players sometimes follow managers/coaches. It also not
uncommon for players to play at other clubs and come back to Gosport.
Richie Moran and Dave Walters moved from Fareham and even Ritchie Colburt
played at Winchester. Keep up the good work Bucko, Ady and Tav.

Just to comment on the game on
Wednesday night - I thought the boys played really well. They kept the

If you thought Wednesday
night's game was good you should have seen the lads at Christchurch!
All the lads worked extremely hard for each other and were really unlucky to
come away with a 1-0 defeat. Our youth team is getting better and
better and confidence is coming back every week. I can say now that
they will stay in Division One and they will be challenging for the league
title next year!

Yer Wednesday night was good
except the last five minutes when the boys lost concentration at the back
and let Fleet back into it. Also looking positive, both of our goals
were very good goals. I was also surprised to see Callum on the bench
Wednesday. I thought him and Steve do very well together up top.
He comes down to strengthen the youth team from reserves and gets put on
bench. I'm not sure what the thinking was for that. Have youth
got another home game this coming Thursday as well in the cup?

Rank outsider - do you really
expect for any of the youth to progress if the reserve team manager and
first team manager are never at games and never talk to the likes of Ady
Camp and Dave Taviner who watch the boys train and play every week and ask
how each of the boys are progressing. What's the point in raising
local talent if you are just going to bring in players not based in this
area to play first team football? Also Locks Heath are the team with
many Gosport based players playing for them. Ben Hardie, Steve Sones,
Steve Cammack, Barry Stelling to name a few who should really be at The
Boro' because they are good enough.

Just thought that I would drop
you a line to inform you of some of the players who came from the youth set
up in the past. Steve Berry (went on to Portsmouth), Andy Lowman, Andy
Bye, my brother Ian and me. A strong youth policy is the best way
forward. Let's see some local talent again. The likes of
Mahoney, Boswell, Coulbert, Stares and myself were all local lads wanting to
play for their town. There is talent out there!
Gary Juryeff |

Inside Knowledge - You have
confirmed my point from previous. Players will only stay if they see an
opportunity to progress. As soon as a good player goes, even at youth
level, it weakens the Club. This has to be dealt with by the Club, from the
top. This is why I made my point about the youth leaving to go elsewhere.
Looking at the league you can see that Locks Heath are doing well, but if
the boys you mention are all local, then they should be playing at Boro'.
Is it because they didn't see an opportunity to progress and have gone
elsewhere.
Rank Outsider |
|
29/01 |
Gary - Valid point re: strong
youth policy. The structure of youth football has changed
substantially at The Boro' over the last ten years. At one time Boro'
had the pick of the local youth players with many playing in the Gosport and
Fareham school's rep side. Nowadays, Boro' youth at every age competes
with a multitude of other clubs locally to attract players from the age of 7
up. Teams such as Spartan Colts and College Youth are incredibly strong
locally and actively seek the stronger players. Additionally, due to a
number of factors including parental and peer pressure etc., many of the
talented players tend to go elsewhere in pursuit of the stronger clubs.
If you study results in the paper on a Monday night, the likes of
Moneyfields and H&W Youth also attract the stronger players from the local
area. Boro' youth's ethos is however a little different from other
clubs in that they prefer to give children the chance to play footy
irrespective of their level of ability. This ethos, right or wrong, is
reflected in the current U18 side as very few of those players emerged
directly from the Boro's youth setup pre U18. In fact many of them
came from a Boro' break away youth football team called Gosport United.
Additionally, many of the areas talented youngsters are at Locks Heath
because that's where Boro' Youth's only FA Level 2 Coach headed for at the
start of this season.

Inside Knowledge - I agree
with your sentiments about the first team and reserves not getting a sniff
because the senior managers don't pay any attention to them. This isn't the
case at Locks Heath. All of the youth who want to play first team and
reserves have been given their chance and have taken it. Barry Snelling and
Bruce Suraci have been playing regularly for the first team. Steve Cammack
will get his chance this week as he's just come back from injury but he's
been a regular in the reserves along with Steve Sones and Elliot Fairweather,
before he joined the Navy. Ben Hardie has been playing for the first team
at Fleetlands. It's not just about the club, it's also about where their
opportunities are. Apart from having a good overall team, some of the youth
teams success at the top of their league is down to the players being
developed, through Saturday football. As Chairman at Locks, I make it
my point to watch the youth and keep the managers informed of players
progress. But to be honest, I don't really have to, as the managers take an
interest themselves.

Season ticket holder thanks
for your support - it is appreciated. We have a game on Thursday at
Privett 7.45 against Winchester City. On Sunday we played Christchurch and
lost 1-0. Their team had seven players who play regular for their
first and reseve sides. We had seven players that started who are
under 16 and still at school. They have been congratulated by opposing
managers on how they have improved since the first time we played each
other. This was never to be an easy season considering the late
situation the youth had been left in so please be patient as it is our
intention to try and attract more of the better younger players in our town
back to their club.

Lionel, I think you have just
highlighted a part of the problem. Having an ethos of being there to just
provide football for kids at a club like Boro' is wrong to a large degree.
In my day at Borough Youth the philosophy was that up to the age of 13/14
that was fine, but from U14 onwards the Club should be looking to develop
players for the Senior Club. That is the reason why the affiliation with
the Senior Club was setup in the first place by Steve Wakley 10 years ago.
Prior to that the Youth were known as Gomer and no different to any other
club in the area. Good players want to play with good players for good
teams. The name of the club is irrelevant to them - which is why the likes
of Spartan Colts and the likes produce some good teams that compete better
than Boro'. If the Club wants to have youth players coming through
into the Under 18's, then they need to catch them a lot younger than they
are by getting back to a winning attitude in the youth setup.

Take a look at the players who
have played for the first team at Horndean this season - Jimmy Cuthbert,

players go to a rubbish club like Horndean?

The lads are finally starting
to play well. They played well against Fleet Town but a lack of

Lionel, valid points but Boro'
Youth do still have a Level 2 coach in the set up. I attended a
reserve team game before Christmas and got speaking to a senior club
official about the game. I commented on the quality of the team and
that a number of youth team players were there. His comment to me was
that nobody in this team is good enough for first team football and will
never be good enough. Now if this is the attitude to encourage local
talent no wonder Pikey is signing kids from else where.

After the posting above from
Pikey's stalker, I have to comment that it is not the Club officials who
pick the first team. Pikey picks the team so if he is alerted to
someone good enough to cut it in the Southern League and feels they can do a
job I am sure he will use them. Lads like the two Wilsons (John and
Aaron) have had to be very patient before getting runs in the team.

Just to let you guys know I
have been reading this column for a while and it seems that you have no idea
of what youth football is about. Enjoying it is the main aim and this
is probably best achieved by winning games - wich we have been doing
recently. Over the past couple of games I have had the luxury of
seeing the game from the sidelines as I am having surgery on my knee and I
feel we are progressing very well. With Dave Taviner on board we are
getting the best coaching in the area and the coaching badges to be frank
don't count for **** when it comes to coaching lads. As for the first
team and reserves I can support the lack of progress. I made a couple
of appearances for the reserves and feel I performed well and had a run of
seven consecutive games. However I did get the run around from
Bemerton Heath's first team forward but I'm 16 and have learned from my
experience. But after that game I was not included in the reserves
again with no explanation as to why I was dropped and this, for a Southern
League club, is not good enough. If the manager felt I was not good
enough at least he could have had the bottle to tell me instead of ignoring
me for the rest of the season. Well sorry for ending on a sour note
but I will be cheering the lads on from the bench and hope we can pick a few
points up in the league and progress in this midweek cup competition.

but not on a Sunday. Why is this?

Why look to Moneyfields?
I will tell you why - as a South Hants Glass side they won the league six
times out of six. This season at U18s they already have one cup final,
a semi and a quarter and they have the best youth players around this area.
It was proved on Sunday - everyone talks about Lloyd O'Neil but what about
Moneys forward Liam Jerram? An all round better player. Yes I
agree the way forward is with Tavs but at least talk to Fred and his

now they all might go to the club down the road. I can't believe
Moneyfields have sacked them both and their lads.

Lets get things straight -
Fred wasn't sacked from Moneyfields FC. He was simply asked to

Granted he is more knowledgeable than most in the county and will be a asset

Boro's team on Sunday was made
up of one U18, one U17 and the rest were all U16s as this has been the case
for most of the season. The team was put together very late and over
the next season will show its worth. Moneyfields had at least two U18s
and majority of the rest were U17s. From Sunday's game, Liam Jeram
looked good and Lloyd didn't have the best game but the lad is allowed an
off day. He had already played three games for the U18s in the cup
that week and was on the bench for the first team the day before! Lets not
compare players but enjoy the local talent we have around the area.

Yes get them all to come to
Gosport, win everything for three years as a reserve/youth side and make
them think they have a future at the club. Then sign big money players
instead who are not that good, chop and change the players and bring more
and more in whilst the youngsters go and make reputations at other clubs.
Having a strong youth/reserve set up at Gosport is great - the future of the
