Justin Bennett kicked Boro's Christmas and New Year campaign off with three points at the expense of Southampton rivals Sholing.

An undistinguished South & West Division derby was drifting towards a goalless stalemate when, with six minutes of normal time remaining Bennett struck.

Sholing 'keeper Mike Hookway and defender Dave Marden got in each others way whilst trying to deal with a ball in from the right by Liam Sewell and presented Justin Bennett with a gift 16th goal of the season.

And with very little time left to grab a point from the game, the visitors then saw Marc Diaper sent off in stoppage time for a halfway-line challenge on George Way which led to an ugly player confrontation in front of the main grandstand.

The three points lift Alex Pike's men to sixth - four points behind fifth placed Sholing.  Gosport entertain North Leigh on Saturday before heading to Poole Town on Monday to complete the Festive fixtures.
