Gosport finished their
first season back in the Southern a creditable 11th with a 2-2 draw in
Oxfordshire this afternoon.
It was a slow start for
both sides and it took until the 24th minute for the game to wake up
when the awareness of James Ford spotted Farrow off his line and the
midfielder exquisitely lobbed the 'keeper from 25 yards to give Boro'
the lead.
Boro' should have
doubled their lead just after the break when both Justin Bennett and
Nathan Lynch both missed sitters - Bennett hitting the outside of the
post with the goal at his mercy and Lynch hitting the rebound over from
ten yards with the 'keeper nowhere.
It was to prove costly
as United levelled eight minutes later when John Mills side-footed past
Mark Brown after he met Luke Holden's cross perfectly.
Abingdon now took
control of the game and were further assisted by another Lynch miss -
the young striker shooting straight at the 'keeper when clean though.
With 22 minutes
remaining the home side took the lead and it was Mills and Holden
combining again with the latter beating Brown with a diagonal shot.
Alex Pike rang the
changes with John Wilson entering the fray for Lee Chudy and he made an
immediate impact as Gosport chased the game.
Gosport's performance
was improving and a quality delivery from Gilham was met by Lynch who
found the net with his looping header to level the scores.
Boro' controlled the
final ten minutes and Farrow was twice forced to deny Gosport the winner
as both Bennett and Wilson went close.
- Justin Bennett
finished the division's highest scorer with 30 league and league cup
goals - five ahead of his nearest challenger.
