After their New Year hangover, Boro' got their charge up the table back on track with a solid second-half performance at Didcot Town. Liam Sewell, who would become the hero of the day, replaced Steve Claridge and Aiden Lewis went straight into the defence for the injured Gavin Jones after his loan move from AFC Totton in midweek. Gosport were intending to shake off memories of a disappointing Christmas and New Year period that had started so well but ended with them conceding six goals in two games but it was the home side who started the better as Boro' failed to find their way. Paul Robinson had twice been denied by Nathan Ashmore before Gosport started to gel but it was only just before the break that they got the breakthrough they needed. Brett Poate whipped in a cross from the Gosport left and Sewell connected to nod the ball over Santangelo to give Boro' a half-time lead. Alex Pike's men put themselves in the driving seat three minutes into the second period when Sewell again made no mistake after a quality ball from Justin Bennett and the young striker added his and Boro's third on the hour finishing off a move involving Bennett and George Way. Gosport were now in full control and back to playing their best football. Didcot were already down and out when Halliday brought down the troublesome Sewell on the edge of the area and Poate stepped up to whip the free-kick into the top corner to make it 4-0. Sewell and Lee Molyneaux were withdrawn from the fray by Alex Pike to be replaced by Ross Langworthy and Dan Woodward and the former went on to have the best chance in the remaining minutes as he saw his shot palmed wide as Gosport ran rampant. With Gosport entertaining third Hungerford Town on Monday night (7.45pm), manager Alex Pike knows that a win could lift his side up to third place - just outside the automatic promotion places. Final score: Didcot Town 0-4 Gosport Borough |
