Town win first Newman/Harper The inaugural Newman/Harper Memorial Trophy was lifted by Fareham Town's Darren Watts last night. In an entertaining game, the Wessex League side comfortably overhauled their Southern League hosts 5-3 in the new competition, instigated in memory of Fareham's Malcolm Watts and Boro's Roy Newman who both lost their fights against Cancer. Alex Pike's changed though still strong Boro' side should have been able to deal with Town but the pace of the Wessex League side left Gosport's weak looking defence in their wake far too often. Town were two up before the break thanks to Gary Austin's neat turn and shot in the ninth minute and Tommy Woodward's simple tap-in thanks to a static Boro' defence. Boro' were briefly back in the tie just after the break when John Wilson's chip reduced the deficit but just after the hour Austin made it three - running through Gosport to net past Frampton. Alex Pike brought on Justin Bennett and Josh Thomas in an attempt to wrestle the game back but Gavin Spurway made it four for Town before Bennett added Boro's second. With only three minutes left there was still time for two more and the goal of the game from Ryan Lock who ran onto a defence splitting ball to score before Danny Thompson scored from 12 yards in injury time. Nicky Newman chose the Gosport man-of-the-match award which was presented to James Ford. Gavin Spurway took the award for Town - presented to him by Beryl Harper.
