Privett improvements: first step achieved
Published: 21 February 2008

The first step on the way to major ground improvements at Privett Park has been achieved with the news that Gosport Borough Council have approved £100,000's worth of funding towards the work.

As it has been widely reported before, the Club has held the £12,000 raised previously in memory of former President Harry Mizen in the hope that significantly more capital can be raised in the form of grants.  The Club are now one step closer to this goal.

It is hoped that the funding from the local authority plus the money raised in Harry's memory can be doubled with a grant from the Football Stadia Improvement Fund up to approximately £225,000.

With this the Club intend to construct the much awaited Harry Mizen Stand on the site of The Shed and then focus on other projects that will enable the Club to achieve a higher ground grading status.

Subject to final funding, these projects include:

  • The construction of the Harry Mizen Stand (approximately 25m long) with additional terracing either side bringing the full length of covered and uncovered terrace opposite the main stand to approximately 50m.

  • A section of terrace behind the north goal (opposite the Club House end)

  • A extension at the board room end of the Club House to construct a meeting/class room that can also be hired out as a small function area.

  • Plastic seating installed in the main stand together with cladding of the stand itself.

  • Replacement of the entire entrance gate area with a new wall, entrance gate and a minimum of three turnstiles.

  • New fencing along the south side of the ground between the tea bar and the existing wall to replace the unsightly corrugated fence currently in situ.

  • An upgrade to the dressing rooms.

The final list of work that can be undertaken relies on what additional funding can be obtained and the final cost of those works but the Harry Mizen Stand will be the Club's number one priority.

It is hoped that the work can be undertaken over the next six to eighteen months - once planning permission and the necessary funding is secured.
