Don't question my commitment says Pike
Published: 24 September 2007

An angry Alex Pike has hit back at fans who questioned the his commitment following missing last week's FA Cup replay against Fleet Town.

Pike, who had arranged a business trip to Spain, was absent for the game - which Boro' lost 3-1.  Following the tie, a number of fans have voiced their opinions and questioned the manager's devotion to the Club.

But Pike has hit back against the doubters.

"I had arranged a business trip for last week and unfortunately we had an unscheduled replay.  By that time it was too late to cancel the trip.  I fully intended to return on the Tuesday but I was unable to book a suitable flight," explained Pike.

"I’ve been in football a long time and I’m a firm believer that everyone is entitled to their own opinion.  I don’t mind anyone criticising me for the teams I pick but what I do have a problem with is when people go online and question my commitment.

"When those people were away having their summer holidays I was working four nights a week to sign a team that was capable of competing in the Southern League.  My employees and family know how hard I work for this Club and how many hours I put in.

"The week before I went away to Spain I was in Oxford on Monday night looking at a player, Tuesday and Thursday I was at training and Wednesday I was at the reserve game.  That's over and above what I do during the day, talking to players, the press, the chairman and other football people.

"My commitment levels are as high as they’ve ever been and that’s one of the ingredients of my success.  I am totally committed to Gosport Borough and non-league football so when someone criticises my commitment, I have a personal problem with them."
