Birmy joins brother at Rocks
Published: 28 November 2007

Gosport's 2006/07 Supporter's Player of the Season David Birmingham has joined Bognor Regis Town for an undisclosed fee.

"Birmy" will join up with his brother Michael who has recently taken over the managerial reigns from Jack Pearce at the Conference South outfit.  It also marks a return for Birmingham to one of his former clubs.

It is not the first time a Conference South club has come calling for the services of the ex-Portsmouth and AFC Bournemouth midfielder with Birmingham turning down approaches from Eastleigh and Havant & Waterlooville during his Boro' career.

But the lure of playing for his brother's outfit who are currently struggling at the wrong end of the division looks to have been too difficult to resist.

Birmingham was instrumental in Gosport's Wessex League Championship campaign last season and deservedly won the Supporter's Player of the Season award for his performances on the Boro' left.  Birmingham also proved a useful goalscorer with his tally in double figures last season.

"We are sorry to see him go," said Club secretary Brian Cosgrave, "but Birmy wanted to give it another crack at Conference level and we won't stand in his way."

His comments were echoed by chairman John Stimpson.

"Birmy was one of the Club's favourite players and extremely popular.  The last thing we wanted was to see him go.

"But the Club has a policy not to stand in the way of players who want to leave to higher level clubs.  Having said that, I don't think Birmy would've gone had it not been an approach from his brother's club.

"Birmy was torn between Boro' and Bognor.  He has enjoyed his time at Privett Park and we have agreed that the door is open for him to return should things not work out at The Rocks," concluded Stimpson.
