"Not bad for an old bird"!
Published: 29 October 2007

Nicky Newman completed the Great South Run in just over 80 minutes and claimed the result was "not bad for an old bird"!

Nicky, widow of Roy Newman, completed the ten miles in appalling weather conditions yesterday morning.

"The weather was absolutely awful with gale force winds - particularly the last two miles along Southsea seafront, driving the rain in sideways (honest!!)," said Nicky.

Out of the 18,000 starters, Nicky finished an excellent 2,636th but was a little disappointed to have not broken the 80 minute barrier, crossing the line in 83 minutes.

A team of runners from Gosport Borough Ladies FC (both female and male) also competed in the run.

Lesley Pickering of GBLFC reported that all the runners were "well and truly soaked" after completing the run.

The Ladies' times ranged from 80 minutes to 110 minutes.  A great effort for their first time in the event.
