Taunton Town 2 - 3 Gosport Borough

Report by James McIntosh

Michael Fernadnes’ goal at the death of the match, wins Gosport the game against Taunton.

In rich form, Gosport had picked up seven points from their last three matches after wins against Poole Town & Bracknell Town, and a draw to Sholing.
Taunton on the other hand had come off a comprehensive 4-0 win over Hanwell, but had lost their two prior games to Poole Town & Sholing.

Since Glenn Howes has taken over we’ve seen a much more attacking philosophy introduced, and this was evident within the first twenty minutes. The deadlock was broken in the 13th minute when a ball glided through the Taunton box, before dropping nicely for Michael Fernandes. The Gosport-man stabbed a shot in from close range to give us the early advantage. 0 - 1

Three minutes later Gosport doubled that lead. A low cross in from the left picked out Dan Wooden. The striker on three goals in his last two previous games, managed to add to that tally when he slotted his shot past Phillips to make it two. 0 - 2

At the midway point in the first half, Gosport nearly made it three through a free-kick. Ben Greenwood, who has been so prominent involving set-pieces this season, nearly added another goal contribution through another one today. Right of centre outside the penalty box, Greenwood whipped in a cross which was met by Joe Morrison at the back post. The defender climbed to reach the header, driving his effort the wrong side of the post.

It was Taunton however who managed to grab the last goal of the half. Josh Owers was subbed on at 35 minutes, and he managed to make an instant impact when he scored on 38. Alfie Moulden’s hanging cross dropped kindly to the substitute at the back post. Owers brought the ball down, and then passed the ball into the back of the open net in front of him.

Half-Time | Taunton Town 1-2 Gosport Borough

Owen Brain had the first opportunity of the second half when he lined up a shot from outside the box, but it was driven well wide. Although he didn’t capitalise from that chance, he made sure to do so on 58 minutes. The Taunton forward linked up well with Jack Rice, before the prior was sent through on goal. Brain dinked his shot over Hall to level the scores. 2 - 2

Provider for the second Taunton goal, Jack Rice, next looked for a goal himself when he managed to hold off his defender before rifling a shot towards goal. Luckily for Gosport, the low-driven effort flew just wide.

Although for most of the second half it looked as though Taunton were the more likely to steal all the points, it was Gosport who found the late winner. A Taunton free-kick in a good position was drilled straight into the Gosport wall before the Hampshire-based side led a counter through Michael Fernandes. The goalscorer later found himself in a good enough position, to take a shot, which beat Phillips, to restore BORO’s lead in Fernandes’ second.

Ten additional minutes were added on but nothing came from them, as it finished:

Full-Time | Taunton 2-3 Gosport Borough

Another performance which demonstrated the high-level of work ethic shown from the squad. Now a ten day break until our next clash when we travel to Wimborne on the 18th, so we’ll see you then. But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
