Gosport progress to the semi-finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup competition after edging past local rival.
When it was confirmed that the A32 ‘Fareport Derby’ would make up the quarter-final, fans from both sides were absolutely buzzing. …with so much history shared between the two sides, and bragging rights at stake.
Fareham have struggled in the league so far this season, and going into the game were sitting bottom of the Isthmian League South Central Division.
Gosport started the cup game impeccably with it taking under a minute to find the lead. Michael Fernadnes took the ball to the Fareham byeline before passing back into Trevor Caborn who looked up and picked out Ethan Taylor at the front post. Taylor was there to steer home his header to give BORO’ the early lead. 1 - 0
After twenty minutes, good footwork from Michael Fernandes saw him progress deep into the Fareham half. The Gosport winger played a pass to Dan Wooden, twenty yards outside of the Fareham goal, the striker quickly switched it back onto Fernandes playing him through on goal. The Nu20 attempted to dink a shot over Thompson but the onrushing keeper came out quickly to make the save.
On the half hour mark Brad Tarbuck couldn’t have come much closer to scoring. Tarbuck from outside the area let a shot fly at goal. The effort had enough power to beat Thompson the Creeksiders goalkeeper, but the post was there to deny the Gosport man.
Six minutes later Michael Fernandes stole the show when he doubled the hosts’ lead. Twenty five yards outside, centre in front of goal, he took one look before curling an effort towards the top left corner. The venomous shot glided home, emphatically making it 2-0
The two goal cushion lasted a matter of seconds as the creeksiders managed to pull one back before the break. A well crafted attack resulted with Matt Pates being fed a ball inside the BORO’ box. Pates stabbed a low-driven shot into the far corner to give his side a lot to fight for in the second half.
Half-Time | Gosport Borough 2-1 Fareham Town.
The visitors did come close to getting back onto level terms after the break when Elliot Holmes was denied by the crossbar. However the second half was defined ten minutes before the end of the ninety. Trevor Caborn who got the assist for the first goal, wanted to add his name to the goal sheet, substitute Benny Read from the right-hand side delivered a hanging cross to the back post which Caborn ran on to and headed home to put Gosport in a much more comfortable position. 3 - 1
Hisham Kasimu had an opportunity to really put the game to rest when he was played through on goal with a defence splitting pass from Ethan Taylor. Kasimu dragged his shot looking to pick out the far corner but instead sent his shot wide.
Gosport saw off any late Fareham resurgence with it finishing:
Full-Time | Gosport Borough 3-1 Fareham Town.
Gosport progress to the semi-finals of the Portsmouth Senior Cup and up next is a league home fixture against Dorchester town, so we’ll see you then. But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
