Boro Reserves Cup Exit!

Boro Reserves Cup Exit!

Fran Derbyshire30 Oct 2023 - 12:20

Unfortunate defeat for our reserves away to Eling in the Junior Cup.

First team game with Gosport Falcons was rightly postponed due to the adverse weather conditions. Thankfully Eling booked an all weather pitch so our reserves were still able to travel and fulfil their fixture.

We knew Eling would be a tough test today despite them being a newly formed team, it's clear to see for all how well they have been doing.

The start of the game was sketchy to say the least with both teams trying to get to terms with the playing surface which was not the best but grateful to be able to get the match played nonetheless.

We quickly realised this was going to be a tough physical battle and we started well. Players were putting everything in to win the 50/50's. We got a very well deserved breakthrough after some link up play between Sammy Mcilroy and Harriet Edwards lead to a short clearance landing at Harriet's feet to which she then finished superbly from the left wing!

Eling didn't stop and if anything this drove them on more! Our defence was tested over the top throughout but they all covered each other brilliantly. We dealt with Eling's threat presence at corners throughout the half until the final corner right before HT where they were able to get a shot away and it trickled into the back of the net between a defender and GK.

With Alise holt suffering two knocks to the head the decision was made to withdraw her from the game, a big loss for the team but player safety comes first.

Unfortunately a free kick for Eling early on was then sent long towards Boro box and they were able to take the lead from it. Despite being behind and now up against it Boro kept trying to play their football with some great link up play on either side. However not being able to get through as we'd hoped, it seemed every bounce was going against us at times and Eling defended well.

Eling then pressured a Boro goal kick and were able to regain possession and score their third goal of the game. Boro still battled hard to the end and kept their cool and remained a team throughout. Which is all you can ask as management and coaches, we take the learning points from today and look to bounce back in the league next week.

Player of the match- Sam Webb
As voted for by both teams. Safe to say Sam was brilliant with reading, breaking up the play and putting her body on the line to clear our lines a lot today! Not to mention covering her teammates when it was called upon without hesitation.
