BORO’ bow out of this year’s FA cup, after a 4-2 defeat to Welling.
The second leg of this fixture, was a result of last week’s 2-2 draw against the national league south side. A last minute goal from Abrahams secured the replay, with it meaning the draw would be concluded at Park view road.
Unfortunately injuries and illnesses would rule many of our star players out, with big names such as: Wooden, Wassmer and Jordan being unavailable. Welling played a similar team to what they played last week, setting up a interesting clash!
In the early minutes of the game, Tarbuck was booked for the first offence, after a challenge on Abrahams. A free kick was awarded, seeing an aerial ball lifted into Byrd who headed the effort wide of the BORO’ post in the first chance of the game.
Despite the initial chance, it would be the underdogs to break the deadlock! An aerial ball fired into Welling’s box, found Harvey Rew at the back post. Making a good connection with the ball, the midfielder headed the ball in from close range to make it 1-0!
The optimism soon started to fade away, with the Wings dominating possession afterwards. Running down the channel, White looped a ball into Tanga with Steward coming out, attempting to collect the ball. However a poor connection saw the keeper spill the ball, before Sharp could hack it off the line!
This chance may not have seen the ball go over the line, but the next chance certainly did! Defender - Lema headed a shot towards goal. The defender’s effort bounced off of Steward; reflecting towards the back of the net in an unfortunate own goal to level the score!
Following this goal, Gosport would be in for a horrid ten minutes! Twenty yards out from goal, Papadopolus riffled a shot, heading into the top corner. Somehow, Toby Steward managed to get a finger tip to push the ball over the bar, in an incredible save!
Even with the good form, Toby couldn’t do anything about the next goal. The man who sent us to the replay, would be the one to give Welling the lead. Good feet from the Abrahams saw the striker wriggle from his man and open in front of goal. Finally slotting the ball into the corner to make it 2-1
Minutes later, the home side would cushion their goal advantage with Lema making it three! Intercepting a ball, the defender drove forward; until he was in the BORO’ box. Finally, Lema hit the ball past Steward, nestling into the bottom corner.
With the half time whistle marking the fact it was:
Welling 3-1 Gosport
Alike last week, Gosport had to act quickly if they were going to salvage any sort of result. Almost like Groundhog Day, Ramos replicated the past game, by getting the first goal of the second half. On the edge of the box, Ramos did incredible to get his shot across! Finessing a ball past Winterbottom to start a potential comeback…
Things even looked as they were starting to go our way, with goalkeeper Winterbottom seeing yellow after clear time wasting! But dishing out the cards, Barsa (Already on yellow) saw his second yellow of the game after a handball. Barsa was sent off, and Gosport were reduced to ten men!
With this moment, more or less confirming the inevitable result, Welling would confirm it by making it four! A good through ball from Vaughan sent goalscorer - Abrahams behind the Gosport defence. One-one-one against Steward, the striker whipped a ball around the keeper to make it four and sealing the win for the home side!
With this confirming our fate, the referee later blew up for full time! Despite fighting to the end, we narrowly miss out on the next round of the FA cup. Who knows, perhaps a blessing in disguise as we can now re-focus on the league and FA trophy! We host Salisbury this Saturday, in another tough tie for BORO, in which should be a thrilling game! Final words from me, UP THE BORO!
