Plymouth Parkway 1 - 2 Gosport Borough - BORO’ Go Fourth

Report by James McIntosh

BORO’ secure first win of 2026, after a Michael Fernandes double is enough to oversee the Plymouth comeback.

Gosport came into this game on the bounce of three consecutive defeats, having not scored in any of those either. The run consisted of challenging games against Farnham, Havant & Waterlooville and Walton & Hersham and the next challenge would be a 170-mile trip to Plymouth Parkway.

Three changes were made from our loss to Walton & Hersham. Luke Cook and Trevor Caborn replaced Rafael Ramos and Ethan Taylor up front. One change in defence as well, as Joe Morrison returned to partner up with Charlie Wassmer at the back, coming in for Finley Walsh-Smith.

BORO’ drew the first blood on the ninth minute. Michael Fernadnes made the most of the Plymouth Parkway defence napping, as the attacker stole possession on the edge of the penalty box. Fernandes was quick to take aim at goal, firing a shot past Luke McCormick to give us the lead. 0 - 1

Minutes after the goalscorer nearly netted his second. This one from inside the penalty area, Fernandes blasted high of the hosts’ crossbar.

Parkway did have an opportunity to get back onto level terms when Carlo Garside’s free-kick picked out Shane White, who glanced a header on target. Fortunately Joe Morrison on the goal line managed to block the effort before BORO’ went on to clear their lines.

Throughout the first half Gosport lost a number of key players through injury. Brad Tarbuck came off following a collision, which saw the addition of Charlie Gunson. Around ten minutes later Ben Greenwood was stretchered off the pitch, in what looked to be a serious injury and Ethan Taylor came on.

Fortunately fans of the away side would have something to cheer about again when the visitors were awarded a penalty. Despite Ethan Taylor being on the pitch, the penalty was given to Michael Fernadnes. The Gosport-man kept his cool, slotting a shot down the middle to bag his second.

This helped to give Gosport a comfortable lead going into the break, as it finished:

Half-Time | Plymouth Parkway 0-2 Gosport Borough.

The home side looked to have come out a different side after the break, taking a much firmer grip on this game. On sixty minutes Ryan Brett climbed to reach a cross in the Gosport box. A lobbed header from Brett was denied by the bar.

Parkway continued to knock on the door and they came close again ten minutes later from the previous chance. Neal from close range struck another wasted header wide.

The Hampshire-based side nearly punished the Plymouth-side for not taking their chances when Charlie Gunson capitalised when he won the ball deep in the hosts’ half. White crucially made an intervention to deny the substitute from causing any damage.

Rio Garside did offer his side a late lifeline with four minutes remaining of normal time when Henry Blackledge made a stop to deny a Neal, with the rebound falling kindly to Garside, who tapped home to give his side a late goal.

Gosport managed to see out the five minutes of added time, nullifying the late threat of Plymouth with it finishing:

Full-Time | Plymouth Parkway 1-2 Gosport Borough

Bolitho Park is always a hard place to go, with it being such a long journey, so Glenn Howes’ side will feel very pleased to iron out the win. This win keeps Gosport in the playoff places, as Sholing and Chertsey also picked up points, staying on the heels of Gosport. Up next for Gosport is a home fixture to Taunton, so we’ll see you then. But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
