With Gosport coming off of a poor performance against Wimborne midweek, they would be looking for redemption against National League North Side Oxford City. Since being relegated from the National league they have picked up just the one win, replacing their manager and bringing in Ross Jenkins formerly of Boreham Wood.
Despite the first quarter of an hour seeing possession equally shared, it was the hosts’ who took the lead. Ashby down the wing did well to spot Potter making a run. A well weighted pass opened up an opportunity for Potter, with the striker tapping one home to give the National League North side the lead.
On the twenty-second minute, goalscorer Potter stretched to reach a Mceacran cross, doing well to latch onto the pass. Directing a shot towards goal, a strong right hand from Ryan Gosney kept it out.
Southern-League Gosport did come close just before the break, with Yearwood applying heavy pressure allowing him to steal a ball from Ashby before playing it across to Wooden. Going for goal, the skipper’s shot dropped just high of the crossbar.
Half-Time: Oxford City 1-0 Gosport Borough
With Gosport having a few good opportunities late on to grab a goal, they started the second half how they finished the first on the attacking front foot. Set in a good position left of the penalty area, Asher Yearwood had hold of the ball. Despite a tough angle the midfielder stroked a ball across the face of goal, beating Mitchell and somehow finding the bottom corner to put us back on level terms.
City trying to restore their lead, saw both Carbon and Burley take aim at Gosney. Two brilliant back-to-back saves from the Salisbury loanee denied the hosts’ second.
Launching a counter attacker from these shots, skipper Dan Wooden led the line. In an outrageous left-footed strike, he sprung a rocket into the far corner to give us the lead for the first time.
Immediately after scoring Dan outmuscled Siddik which allowed him to unleash another strike towards goal, using that deadly left foot. Once again beating Mitchell and cushioning the visitor’s lead.
Fifteen minutes left of normal time, Coyle whipped in a deep ball towards Carbon at the back post. The striker did well to reach the cross, glancing an effort into the back of the net to grab a goal back. But the stretch saw him suffer an injury forcing the goalscorer off the pitch.
The last effort of normal time came through Parker charging at the BORO’ defence before laying a ball back into Ezennolim stood on the penalty spot. Rushing a shot the substitute blazed a ball high in a real wasted chance.
Ten minutes were added on but Gosport controlled the game well, with it finishing:
Full-Time: Oxford City 2-3 Gosport Borough
This will definitely be a result which lives in the Gosport history books. One of our best victories in years and now all fans will eagerly await the draw on Monday to find out who we play… And as always final words from me: UP THE BORO!!
