Gosport Borough 4 - 3 Weymouth

Report by James McIntosh

Gosport edge past Weymouth, to make it consecutive home wins.

Coming into this one BORO’ would have been looking to build on the weekend’s win at home to Tiverton. Weymouth, also looking for a positive result having had a turbulent start to Southern League life since being relegated from the National League South last season.

It was the Terras who broke the deadlock in this one. Robinson made a progressive run allowing him to get to 20 yards outside of the Gosport goal. Having not being closed down, the Weymouth midfielder struck a thunderbolt past Ryan Hall to give the visitors the early advantage. 0 - 1

On twenty-two minutes the visitors had a great opportunity to double their lead, when they were giving a penalty following substitute, Burrows, being brought down by Ramos in the BORO’ box. Goodship stepped up, shot towards the left-hand side but was denied by Ryan Hall who excellently got down low to make the save.

In making this heroic save, Ryan Hall unfortunately injured himself in doing so. This saw the keeper needing to come off. With no substitute goalkeeper on the bench it meant an outfield player needed to take the role in between the sticks. Rory Williams was the player picked for this challenge.

He made his first save against Watts on half an hour, bundling the shot with his gloves in a confident first piece of keeping.

Seven minutes later Gosport levelled the score. Rafael Ramos came forward for Gosport before sliding a pass into Ethan Taylor outside the ‘D’. The striker was quick to flick back to Michael Fernadnes, and he struck a left-footed power shot which beat Clark to level the proceedings. 1 - 1

In quick succession of the equaliser, Gosport took the lead little under two minutes later. A hanging corner cross from Ben Greenwood found Charlie Wassmer at back post stood on the goal-line, who did well to nod it onto Trevor Caborn. Caborn stabbed a low shot past Clark to give us the lead. 2 - 1

The lead was cushioned a matter of minutes later. Trevor Caborn leading a counter attack glanced his way forward into the Weymouth half before playing Rafael Ramos in behind the Weymouth backline. The Portuguese forward put it on the plate for Michael Fernadnes open in front of goal, as the goalscorer tapped home for his second.

BORO’ made a bright start to the second half and ten minutes after the re-start Gosport made it four. Adam Tomasso’s sliding challenge drove the ball forward into Ethan Taylor which sent the striker through on goal. Taylor cooly stroke the ball past Clark to cushion the lead. 4 - 1

Following this goal, Gosport started to drop off as Weymouth started to build up their confidence. Makeshift keeper, Rory Williams made a great stop to deny Watts, pushing the Weymouth-man’s chipped shot onto the crossbar, before gathering.

Shots were being relentlessly aimed at Rory in goal. Weymouth eventually got one past him on 72 minutes when Stone dinked a shot from distance over the keeper, to claw one back. 4 - 2

Seconds later Weymouth got their third. Goodship made his way to the right-side of the 18 yard box before squaring a pass which flew across the six yard box, finding Moss. The Weymouth youngster bundled the cross in from the back post to give the Terras that late lifeline. 4 - 3

Gosport resolutely defended for the final twenty minutes, as it finished:

Full-Time | Gosport Borough 4-3 Weymouth FC.

Almost similar to the weekend’s game against Tiverton. Not our finest performance, but we did push our way over the line to secure the three points. Up next we travel to Dorchester at the weekend, so we’ll see you then. But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
