Gosport progress to the next round of the FA Cup, following an impressive display against Basingstoke.
Having witnessed a poor defeat to Walton & Hersham on Monday, BORO’ were seeking redemption back at the AEI Stadium. They were up against a Basingstoke-side who came into the game on 6 league points from 5 games compared to BORO’s 4 from 5
Gosport having recorded just two shots on target in that loss on Monday, we equalled that stat within the first five minutes of this game, resulting with some corners being given to the hosts’. One corner on the ninth minute picked out Rafael Ramos, who flicked back into Charlie Wassmer. The defender pelted one home to give us the lead on the ninth minute. 1 - 0
Jack Ball on the twenty-five minute mark recorded Basingstoke’s first real attempt of the game. Twenty yards out, he blazed a shot over the crossbar.
Arguably the game defining moment came ten minutes before the break. Ferdinand inside the penalty box, was shoved to the floor by Adam Tomasso before the striker could get across his shot. Despite appeals from the visitors’, Gosport rapidly made their way up the other end of the pitch. It lead to Ethan Taylor, in acres of space, left one-on-one with keeper Grant. The Basingstoke’ Nu1 needed to act fast, he rushed out of his box, and wiped out Taylor. As a result a free-kick was awarded, but more notably a straight red was shown to Grant. Although Gosport didn’t capitalise from the resulting free-kick, they would go onto make the most of the extra man….
It was nearly two just before the break when Trevor Caborn had his goal denied by the post. A long ball was reached by the winger outside the penalty box. Smartly dinking a shot over Hardman. The substitute keeper was beaten, but the right-hand post denied the Gosport striker.
Half-Time | Gosport Borough 1-0 Basingstoke Town.
Quarter of an hour into the second half, and Gosport did double that lead. BORO’ were awarded a set-piece twenty yards out, in the centre. It would be Ben Greenwood to take, who came close to scoring a set-piece on Monday. The Farnborough loanee stood up again, floated his shot over the wall before falling into the bottom corner. A Roberto Carlos - style, finish! 2 - 0
The home side should have killed the game off when substitute Dan Wooden, found himself with the ball after receiving a well-timed cross from Greenwood. The striker took a little too long taking the shot, allowing Basingstoke to flood players in front of the goal, with one of them able to deny the striker’s shot.
Unfortunately Gosport weren’t able to hold onto the clean sheet, as they conceded in the dying moments. A corner swung in from the left, saw Legg stab a ball home for the visitors to claw one back.
Despite the late goal, it was ultimately too late to worry Gosport, with it finishing:
Full-Time | Gosport Borough 2-1 Basingstoke Town.
A much brighter performance today, in which the team overall looked a lot more cohesive and confident. With that win, we go into the draw for the next round of the Cup…
And final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
