Report from James McIntosh
Gosport back to winning ways following victory against playoff pushing Dorchester.
Following last week’s disappointing display against a Chertsey side flirting with relegation, fans would have been sceptical going into this game against a Dorchester side who have had a renaissance under Tom Killick.
The hosts had the better start to the game with Daws strolling down the left channel in the eleventh minute before pulling back into Gwenge. The Magpies forward took aim at goal meeting the palms of Adam Parkes in the first concrete chance of the game.
Two Excellent chances for BORO’ in quick succession came ten minutes later. Defender Moore sensationally kept it goalless after making two crucial goal line clearances, following Gosport stabbing shots towards goal. A minute onwards from these clearances a Wooden header was pinged towards goal forcing a good stop by Lee.
Despite Gosport not being able to convert from these flurry of chances, the Hampshire-based side capitalised just before the half hour mark. Nnamdi Nwachuku made a darting run towards the Dorchester box. When in a shooting position, the winger cut to his left foot before striking at goal. While on route to goal, the shot took a crucial deflection from Cameron Murray, wrong-footing Lee to make it 1-0
Minutes later Gosport on the counter saw Nwachuku cause more danger, sliding a ball into Asher Yearwood. Firing at goal and forcing a save from Lee, Stanley got onto the rebound but the substitute’s shot was met by another goal line clearance from Turner.
Half-Time: Dorchester 1-0 Gosport
BORO’ continued from where they left off in the second half showing great tenacity. It took just eight minutes after the restart to cushion our lead. Another quick Gosport attack saw a ball worked onto Nwachuku, right of the pass. Squaring into Tarbuck with the former Havant & Waterloovile man teeing up a chance for Alfie Stanley just outside the box. The former Pompey-man turned his defender before slotting home a clean finish to make it two.
Having taken that two goal cushion, the hosts’ are threatening more towards the BORO’ goal. Robinson came close midway in the second half, firing wide of Parkes’ post.
With two minutes left of the ninety, Gwenge spotted the Gosport keeper off his line, audaciously trying to chip Parkes from range seeing his shot skim the crossbar.
Six minutes of additional time were added on but nothing came of it for either teams with it finishing:
Full-Time: Dorchester 0-2 Gosport
Attendance: 685
What a reaction this is from last week’s 2-0 defeat to Chertsey. There was only ever one side in this contest and this was huge testament to the team’s desire to win today.
Up next Saturday we have another big test when we take on tittle chasing Merthyr, so we’ll see you then! But final words from me: UP THE BORO!!!
