Gosport Borough produced a brilliant display at Grange Lane today to see off North Ferriby by goals to 1 and book a place in the last four of the FA Trophy. Goals from Sammy Igoe (pictured) and Tim Sills in the first half were enough to give the visitors the win.
Alex Pike made one enforced change to the side that triumphed last week at Weston Super-Mare, with Ian RIchardson (cup-tied) being replaced by Dan Wooden. Andy Forbes moved to left back, with Brett Poate shifting across to centre back.
Billy Heath named a site that included top-scorer Nathan Jarman on the bench as he continued his return from injury.
The game started fast and within the first minute, Nathan Ashmore was called into action as D'Laryea fired a shot that was dipping inside the crossbar before it was tipped over by the 'keeper.
A succession of corners followed but the defence coped well and in the 9th minute, the away side took the lead, completely against the run of play. A long ball found Mike Gosney on the left wing and he almost lost possession but he managed to get a left footed cross away. The danger should have been cleared but instead the ball fell to Sammy Igoe 8 yards from goal and the experienced midfielder calmly slotted the ball between Adam Nicklin's leg to open the scoring.
Despite now being in front, Gosport were still on the back foot and The Villagers almost had a great opportunity to level in the 15th minute but Wilson shot wide from a tight angle when there was a man free at the bak post.
The game began to settle into a pattern and was turning into a real midfield battle, with neither sided really able to get a foothold in the game and chances were few and far between.
Dan Wooden believed he was fouled by captain Matt Wilson in the 8th minute, as the striker raced onto a long ball from Brett Poate but the referee saw nothing wrong and play carried on.
Just four minutes after though, the lead was doubled. Jamie Brown got possession about thirty yards from goal and decided to rifle in a shot that was on target but was intercepted by Tim Sills. The ex-Torquay man, much to the surprise of the North Ferriby backline, was adjudged onside and quickly swivelled in the box and smashed the ball home from 10 yards, all in one movement.
The home side looked shell shocked and for the next few minutes, Gosport were on top and looking assured in their play.
Anthony Wilson should have at least tested Ashmore in the 40th minute, but he blazed over after breaking free from Brett Poate in the penalty area.
Wilson had another attempt, this time one on target, hacked away from danger by Brett Poate in stoppage time.
The second half was only 4 minutes old when the hosts made their impressive play count. Danny Smith was booked for a foul on Wilson, giving the home side a chance to swing the ball into the danger area. It came off the head of Jamie Brown and bounced in the box, before Dean Lisles smashed it into the top corner of Ashmore's net.
This goal gave the team a much needed shot of confidence and, roared on by their noisy support, were well on top and looked very likely to equalise as a succession of corners heaped pressure on to the visitor's defence. Sam Pearce and Brett Poate were superb though and made numerous clearances - both aerial and on the ground.
Ashmore was also having a great game and in the 59th minute, raced off his line to claim a dangerous corner that was taken by the lively Jamie Yates.
Anthony Wilson was next to have a chance in the 61st minute, after he cut inside from the left wing and beat Brett Poate but his shot slammed into the wall to the right of Ashmore's goal.
With 25 minutes left on the clock, top scorer Nathan Jarman was brought on and North Ferriby went 4-3-3 in a bid to grab that second goal.
This preceded two successive corners from Yates, the first of which caused a scare for the away side. The ball fell to Danny Clarke but his shot from 22 yards was brilliantly blocked by Danny Smith and defected behind for a corner.
As the clock ticked round to half past 4 and the game entered the last 15 minutes, the home side really ramped up the pressure but Pearce was equal to a superb through ball and managed o head it back to his 'keeper Ashmore before Wilson latched on to it.
In a rare attack for the visitors, Gosney's corner from the right wing was headed out to Jamie Brown but his 35 yard shot was well wide in the 80th minute.
Gosport still had opportunities to seal the game, when Dan Wooden's shot from 3 yards was fantastically saved, in the 81st minute, after Gosney whipped in a delightul low cross.
The hosts had a spell of six corners in a row, as they really ramped up the pressure with just five minutes left but all 11 Gosport players were throwing themselves in front of the ball heroically to deny the hosts the equaliser.
Ashmore then pulled off the save of the game to effectively win the tie in the last minute of stoppage time. Wilson's shot looked destined for the bottom corner of the net but the 'keeper flung himself at the ball and somehow managed to tip it onto the post and out for a corner.
